Apparent wind is the direction of the wind what you feel while sailing. However, it is not the true wind direction. In this video I explain how to figure out what the difference is and how to use that information. Understanding why the true wind direction is always aft of the apparent wind will help you understand sail trim and aid in getting up wind.

Heaving to is an important skill that is often overlooked. It is an excellent storm tactic and it can be used to "park" the boat in open water that is too deep to anchor. I recommend practicing heaving to in fair weather so when things are rough you can do it without have to think too much.

    I want to add this bc I found something that works for me and hopefully it works for anyone out there. I’m very prone to getting sea sick I have thrown up almost every time I’ve been on a boat besides the past 3 times. Idk why this works but if you take Dramamine less drowsy 2 hours before your trip and then take a Dramamine nausea medicine pill right as you’re getting on the boat it makes it to where I can ride any boat and I am never sick after that. Just make sure you eat before taking medicine. Also it gets rid of anxiety for some reason idky but it calms you down a lot and you don’t have a worry in the world. Ik this works for me but hopefully it works for everyone out there that easily gets sea sick like me.

      @tracenewman1604 It is my recommendation to take it the night before. In your case, you might try taking one the night before and then 1 just before you leave on the boat. Just be careful if you take it the night before, and you intend to drive, as it might make you drowsy.

    Interestingly…. Lying supine and closing my eyes resolved symptoms. It made for an interesting experience at the airport. The spinning feeling (MDS), was resolved with 0.5mg clonazepam. Otherwise, it hung around along with some nausea. I’m not normally motion sick and I do have an injury that has resolved in a number of compensations. I suspect these compensations + the stormy seas pushed me over my edge. I’m going to try gravol ahead of boarding to see if that resolves symptoms. Otherwise, I’m going to try scopolamine.

      @@dubes5594 This is an excellent suggestion. However, you do have to remember to put the apple tree in the center of the boat so the boat doesn't end up tipping over.

    Hello Captain, Wonder what you used to clean up the mess? On my boat, the seagulls eat their dinner (crab) and it s a real mess. I have tried Dawn, Oxy crystals, CLR, bleach, Krud cutter and soft scrub. The Dawn detergent remove some of the mess but Im still left with some very stubborn stains and Im beginning to scrub through my deck paint. Any suggestions are appreciated. Many Thanks.

    I did this a few times a day for 2 weeks prior to getting on the boat. We've been sailing for over 4 weeks now and I haven't been sick at all. I felt some slight queasiness but I was down in the galley at the time. Thanks for the great info

    you don't mention anything about tying off the loose bottom of the sail. Yes if overpowered you go faster by reefing. And you do not have so much leeway too.

      No, This is the best way! We do it in racing: The boat keeps going, It’s steady, on starboard tack - right of way, and even the reefing line is tied to allow the reefed sail to fall/fold freely instead of being crushed by the boom end of the line as it is tightened. Don’t know what you mean exactly by “Helm into the wind “ ? Going higher doesn’t facilitate the reefing, but slows the boat, destabilizes it, increases the risk of stalling and accidental tack, particularly so in rougher seas.

    need to tie a water knot on the webbing. also, aren’t you briefly unclipped at the mast?

      you are correct a water knot would be better on my prototype but sewing on the final finished version. The way it's supposed to work at that the mast transfer, is that you put the new clip on first before you take the old clip off. Sorry, If I didn't make that clear.

    The complicating facotr, of course, is cross wind. With a boat that has a long keel with cut away forefront, as soon as any wind hits the boats while you are going slow either foreward or backward, the bow wants to blow off downwind and if the wind is strong it can easily over power the effect of the rudder that has little water running over it..

    Im working with a fish lab at my university this summer. First day out on the boat i was sea sick for 4 hours straight. Only affected me when the boat was stopped wierdly enough... I would run to the back of the boat and yak, and then id run back to the front to try and assist with something 😂

    Thank you for the video! How did you tension/connect to the 2nd cleat? The video cuts out at 01:16, my question is about the seconds that would have followed.

      When I made the video I already knew that this first design was not going to be my last so I was just faking the attachment at that point. But if you go to 2 minutes and 58 seconds, you can see where I'm attaching the lines for real.

    So in this example, where the wind is to port, the tiller would be set as if trying to steer the boat to port?

      Yes, if the main fills with air because the boat has fallen off (to starboard) a little bit, the boat will start to move, then the steering (set to port) will push the boat back up into the wind and stall it out again.

    Haven’t read all the comments, so this may be redundant,, but to me, your credibility went way down when you started referring to the fender as a “bumper”. New boaters watch these videos to learn and you aren’t doing them any favors teaching them incorrect terminology. When I teach new students I find myself saying things like: see that thing on the deck? It isn’t a “rope” it’s a line,, and a lines has a name which describes its purpose. It’s a halyard, or a sheet, or a downhaul etc. If you know the correct term, use it, teach it. If you don’t well I’m not sure what to say but pretty sure I don’t need to spend much time on this channel.

    Why not have the two tethers attached to yourself as with regular tethers, use one going to the mast then clip on the second to work at the mast then unclip the first to go forward. The drawback is as you go forward the boat is very narrow, so the tether is again too long.

      My tether going forward is very short, as all I am doing is down on the deck, like setting up an anchor or hooking up the tack of a spinnaker.

    I appreciate your explanation. Being new at sailing when I try to look up how to do things, the videos seem to be designed more to impress the viewer than instruct because they use salty old sea dog vocabulary. I realize that I need to learn these terms but I prefer videos like yours that explain things where I can understand.

    I'm not sure I would trust 4200 pound rated nylon webbing. The knot will reduce this to 2100 pounds breaking strength immediately and if you fall hard it may very well put more strain on the webbing than it can hold.

      Let's say it's only 2000 lbs and a 200 lbs person dropped hard enough to put 2000 lbs breaking force on it. That would be 10 times the force of gravity, all concentrated on a narrow strap. The damage that would be done to your body with that kind of force would mean that the strap breaking is the least of your problems.

    Does not work at all on a Windows 11 machine with 4K monitors. It can't even download charts as it claims it needs a directory, which was already created because the app sees it in other settings..... Navionics is the way to go.

      I'm sorry you're having trouble. I produced this video using my Windows 11 notebook, and I haven't had any issues. Navionics is excellent software, but I was trying to offer a free way to learn and experiment. You should be able to use the techniques that I was teaching in the navionic software.     Excellente vidéo. But i think you are wrong on the 1 inch difference gonna make your top of the mast off of 1/2 a inch. What is true is if you have one inch more on one side. The correction is give 1/2 inch from the other side and take 1/2 inch from that one side. But in the case you have like in this exemple one inch difference. So the the mistake is 1/2 inch. Let say your boat is 10 ft large and 40 ft high. The triangle (5x40) keep his angle. It rotate from the base 1/2 inch the top gonna move about 8 time more (40/5=8) . So the top of the mast should be like 1/2 x 8 = 4 inches off. 4inches off gonna certainly make difference in the sailing performances. That is why it is important to be as accurate as possible to center the mast.

      Only one RUclips viewer said it worked. It worked for several friends that did it in preparation for the video. I have no reports of it failing. I am disappointed in how few people have reported back.
